THE POSITION

RAN is looking for a motivated, passionate and tenacious individual to support our global Forest team as the Japan Campaigner. The ability to execute public campaigns in Japan in collaboration with staff and allied organizations is essential. A high level of professionalism and confidentiality is crucial.

This position leads the execution of public campaign work for the Forest Program in Japan and will work side-by-side with our Japan Representative, Communications Coordinator and our 20+ person team working across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

Reports to: The Japan Campaigner will report to RAN’s Forest Policy Director and communicate on activities to the global team on a weekly basis.

Location: Eligible to work remotely within the greater Tokyo area or to work out of RAN’s office in Tokyo.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design campaign strategies in collaboration with other team members.
  • Lead the execution of public campaign work in Japan.
  • Maintain an active network with potential and established allied groups in Japan, and support collaborative work with impacted Indigenous communities in collaboration with other team members including RAN’s Indonesia-based partners.
  • Lead campaign work with regional and international social and environmental NGO’s and communities in Japan.
  • Spokesperson to media and at public events
  • Author of public content on RAN Japan’s website
  • In conjunction with the Japan Communications Coordinator, and the Communications and Digital teams, design, create and use a range of communications tools (direct actions, direct communication, traditional and social media, briefing sheets, and other tools) to communicate with target audiences and to achieve campaign objectives;
  • Coordinate and manage logistical arrangements for various campaign activities, including information gathering and facilitation, physical trips for the project team and key stakeholders.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Minimum 3 years of campaigning experience in Japan, or equivalent transferable experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Japanese with an ability to synthesize information into compelling publication-ready content
  • Experience in public speaking/ presenting/ being a spokesperson for civil society
  • Solid computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and strong internet research skills);
  • Strong organizational, time management and project management skills;
  • Highly organized, ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced campaigning environment
  • Experience working with civil society in Japan
  • Working knowledge or strong interest and willingness to learn about the issues the Forest Program works on including but not limited to: forests, deforestation, Indigenous rights, human rights, climate change, forest-risk commodities, responsible finance;
  • Experience with or interest and eagerness to learn about Racial Justice and non-violent direct action;
  • A proven track record of working effectively in teams
  • Ability to travel and willingness to work within a remote working environment with flexible hours for meetings with our global team based in North America, Europe, and Asia.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Preference for someone with experience/knowledge in finance sector and/or corporate campaigning
  • Preference for someone with experience in undertaking fieldwork outside Japan
  • Preference for someone who can speak Bahasa Indonesian

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time position with an anticipated fee starting at 5,000,000 JPY annually, commensurate with experience.
